Why does the Pigeon have to go to school? He already knows everything! And what if he doesn't like it? What if the teacher doesn't like him? What if he learns TOO MUCH!?! Ask not for whom the school bell rings; it rings for the Pigeon!
This is probably my very favorite back to school picture book。 Hilarious and snarky and witty, with an absolutely perfect ending。
Ms。 Tyler,
As always, Mo Willems' Pigeon makes me laugh out loud! Pigeon is very worried about going to school and has lots of questions。 What if the teacher doesn't like pigeons? What if he doesn't like school? Will finger paint stick to his feathers? Readers might find out the answer to these questions and more queries in this latest "Pigeon" installment as of June 2021。 I think most of my elementary students will appreciate this book as a read aloud。 As always, Mo Willems' Pigeon makes me laugh out loud! Beth,
Another great pigeon book, with the drama and high emotion portrayed in simple text and pictures。 For me, the enjoyment is tempered with my adult knowledge that many kids who remind me of the pigeon will in fact be quite miserable at school。 Or other kids who do not remind me of the pigeon。 Some kids like school, but for some, the pigeon's fear is very appropriate。 Another great pigeon book, with the drama and high emotion portrayed in simple text and pictures。 For me, the enjoyment is tempered with my adult knowledge that many kids who remind me of the pigeon will in fact be quite miserable at school。 Or other kids who do not remind me of the pigeon。 Some kids like school, but for some, the pigeon's fear is very appropriate。 。。。more
Addie Healy,
This silly book was a hit with my students on the first day of school! Kids (and teachers!) of any age still get first day jitters。 So even though it is geared toward K-2, I think all can relate to this hilarious pigeon who doesn’t want to go to school。

#49 in my 365 Kids Books challenge and multi-year effort to get Goodreads to fix the Top Readers, etc。 lists。 For a fuller explanation see my review for 101 Amazing Facts about Australia You can see all the books on their own shelf。 It seems unlikely that I will actually achieve 365 reviews of kids books this year, but I don't want to stop。This one was new to me。 As much as I miss getting to peruse the New shelves at the library each week, and I do, apparently I overlooked this one back in 2019。 #49 in my 365 Kids Books challenge and multi-year effort to get Goodreads to fix the Top Readers, etc。 lists。 For a fuller explanation see my review for 101 Amazing Facts about Australia You can see all the books on their own shelf。 It seems unlikely that I will actually achieve 365 reviews of kids books this year, but I don't want to stop。This one was new to me。 As much as I miss getting to peruse the New shelves at the library each week, and I do, apparently I overlooked this one back in 2019。 It amused me that the school desks looked like the ones I used in the prior millennium。As a fan of front-and-back matter, notes on how the art was done, etc。 I am an even bigger fan of custom endpapers。 Whimsical endpapers in particular add a lot to the overall feel of a book。 And when they involve repeating images that might be different, so that you have to take a moment and really look at them, all the better。 。。。more

Ms Bright,
Ah, these Pigeon books!I haven't read all of them, but I think The Pigeon HAS to go to School might be my favourite so far。Pigeon is such an obnoxious character, but here we got to see him vulnerable。 All the reasons he doesn't want to go to school are SO valid, and Mo Willems outdid himself with the emotion in his few-line illustrations in this one! Heidi Jarvis,
I like how Mo ties in the title to the story。 Pigeon does not want you to know that he has to go to school。 This book also allows for response from the reader separately and independently or even for read-aloud。 The adult reading to younger readers could talk about a whole different scenario every time。 Pigeon is very dramatic and has lots to complain about, so there is a lot of content to talk about with young readers about school。

The Pigeon Has to Go to School is about a pigeon and its efforts to not go to school。 The pigeon argues with the reader for most of the book trying to convince the reader that it shouldn't be forced to go to school。 However, the pigeon traps itself in the arguments it's trying to make and realizes that it should go to school。I found this book to be better than the first book: Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Super cute read。 My boys loved it。

Text-to-World ConnectionThis book was so funny! When Pigeon finds out that he has to go to school, he gets really worried and stressed out。 He's never been to school before and doesn't know what to expect。 My students can relate to this book because they are returning to school next week, some of them for the very first time。 They may be experiencing some of the anxieties that pigeon is。 We as teachers may be feeling this way, too。 What will the other kids think of me? Reading may be too hard。 T Text-to-World ConnectionThis book was so funny! "What if there is math? Or numbers? Why does the alphabet have so many letters? Reading can be hard with one big eye!"Summary: Pigeon learns that he has to go school and loses his cool for a minute。Pigeon books can be hit or miss for me, but I love this one。 Funny and also super relatable for kids who have a hard time with new things。 "What if there is math? Pigeon has been much brisker and sharper in the past。 This one was annoying … to me。
Sean Harding,
The ninth and last of the Pigeon series - and it will be missed。The Pigeon is a great series with fun characters, and well told and illustrated。Willems is some kind of picture book ninja!
Annabel G,
Another great Pigeon book by Mo Willems!
Lynda,
Feisty, a tad unreasonable and always in the middle of a drama of his own making, the Pigeon is actually a mirror of our pre-school selves! The simple text and illustrations are a delight for any reader of any age。
Connie T。,
While some of the Pigeon books feel repetitive, this one was fun。 While pigeons don't typically go to school (and if this book remained true to form, Pigeon would be denied this adventure, too) young children will be able to identify with Pigeon's fears and concerns。 Typical Willems - doesn't disappoint。 While some of the Pigeon books feel repetitive, this one was fun。 While pigeons don't typically go to school (and if this book remained true to form, Pigeon would be denied this adventure, too) young children will be able to identify with Pigeon's fears and concerns。 Typical Willems - doesn't disappoint。 。。。more
Hera Sundstrom,
This would be a great book to help children calm their nerves about going back to school or the first time ever going to school。 It goes through all of the main questions they ask and helps to solve every one of them。 I would definitely want to read more of the series。
Makayla Mitchell,
This whole series of books just makes me happy。 I think the pigeon is cute and most of the topics of the books are very relatable to students! It makes them want to read them and the humor always makes kids laugh。
Nancy Eyre,
As always, Mo Willems creates a silly story that also helps children deal with big feelings。
Nia Hodnett,
This modern fantasy is a silly story about a pigeon being afraid to go to school。 I believe this would be a great interactive read-aloud, the pigeon asks the readers questions about school and allows pauses for responses。 I liked that the artwork was very simple and the words were apart of the illustrations, it is reminiscent of a comic book。
Caroline,
Fantastic book very useful for children worried about school。This story addresses many of the fears and anxieties that little ones feel as they get ready to go to school for the first time in a fun and silly way。 This is a perfect book for back to school and will have kids laughing and giggling as they face their fears with Pigeon。

The book is about a Pigeon who doesn't want to go to school。 First, he says that he knows everything, then he starts to wonder if the head might pop off because of learning too much。 He admits that not knowing what to expect on his first day at school caused him to stress。 When he finally decided to go to school, he began to wonder how to get to school, but when the Pigeon saw the school bus, he got so excited and wanted to go to school。 I believe reading this book can help young children overco The book is about a Pigeon who doesn't want to go to school。 First, he says that he knows everything, then he starts to wonder if the head might pop off because of learning too much。 He admits that not knowing what to expect on his first day at school caused him to stress。 When he finally decided to go to school, he began to wonder how to get to school, but when the Pigeon saw the school bus, he got so excited and wanted to go to school。 I believe reading this book can help young children overcome nervous feelings before going to new situations daycare, preschool, or kindergarten。 。。。more
